Crafting Beauty with Heart: Meet Jo, the Ethical Jeweller from Bristol
Share
Hello, lovely readers! My name is Jo, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to my very first blog post. I'm a proud resident of the vibrant city of Bristol, UK, and I've been on a jewellery-making journey for over 30 years. Today, I want to share a little bit about my story, my crafting evolution, and my deep-rooted commitment to ethical and sustainable jewellery design.
A Beaded Beginning
My journey into the world of jewellery design began at the tender age of 11, thanks to an inspiring experience at Brownies. It was there that I first discovered the enchanting world of beads, colours, and the art of creating something beautiful with my own hands. Beaded jewellery quickly became my creative outlet, a space where I could let my imagination run wild.
Throughout my teenage years, I diligently honed my skills. While many of my peers were preoccupied with typical teenage pastimes, I was absorbed in threading beads, experimenting with designs, and sharing my creations with friends and family. Little did I know that this childhood hobby would eventually transform into a lifelong passion.
The Spark of Silversmithing
As the years rolled by, my love for jewellery making continued to flourish. And then, a serendipitous moment occurred that would change the course of my crafting journey. My now-husband, who knows me better than anyone else, recognised my unwavering passion for jewellery and decided to gift me something truly extraordinary - courses in Silversmithing. These courses opened up a whole new world of possibilities. I was introduced to the art of shaping, soldering, and crafting intricate pieces of jewellery from raw materials. The transformation was profound, and I fell head over heels for silversmithing. It allowed me to elevate my craft and create pieces that not only looked beautiful but felt substantial and enduring.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Throughout my journey, one thing has remained constant - my commitment to ethical and sustainable jewellery design. In a world where fast fashion and mass production often take centre stage, I've chosen a different path. I'm deeply passionate about using recycled materials like Surfite, a stunning by-product of surfboard production, and recycled Sterling Silver and Gold in my designs. These materials not only lend a unique character to my creations but also contribute to a more sustainable future for our planet. Recycling and repurposing materials isn't just a trend; it's a commitment to reducing our ecological footprint and preserving the beauty of our natural world for future generations.
The Ethical Stone Connection
But my commitment doesn't end with recycled materials. I'm equally passionate about incorporating ethically sourced stones into my designs. Each stone tells a story, not only of its geological formation but also of the responsible journey it undertook to reach my crafting table. These stones are more than just embellishments; they're a testament to my belief in fair labor practices and sustainable sourcing. As I embark on this blogging journey, I'm excited to share more about my crafting process, the stories behind my creations, and my ongoing exploration of ethical and sustainable jewellery design. Together, we'll delve deeper into the world of conscious crafting, where beauty meets responsibility.
Thank you for joining me on this adventure, and I can't wait to connect with all of you as we celebrate the art of jewellery making, ethical sourcing, and a shared love for all things beautiful and sustainable.
